Yogi Berra, baseball’s greatest champion, died Tuesday at age 90. The Hall of Fame catcher, who grew up in St. Louis’ The Hill neighborhood, won 10 World Series as a member of the New York Yankees. But as The New York Times wrote in its obituary, he might have been even better known for “issuing a seemingly limitless supply of unwittingly witty epigrams known as Yogi-isms.”
Here in St. Louis, we’re quite familiar with outsized baseball personalities who somehow manage to mangle sentences in such a way as to sound profound. Cardinals broadcaster Mike Shannon has his own list of famously nonsensical quotations, known as Shannonisms. In fact, we included listening to him call a game on KMOX in our 101 Things Every St. Louisan Most Do feature in 2013, writing “Shannon speaks as if he took diction lessons from Yogi Berra.”
